Do You Have High Intrapersonal Intelligence? Here Are Simple Ways to Know

Date:

You may have heard about interpersonal intelligence, and it typically refers to a person’s social skills. One lesser-known concept is intrapersonal intelligence, which comes from the Latin word intra, which means inside or within one’s self.

Intrapersonal Intelligence is also part of Howard Gardner’s Nine Multiple Intelligences theory. Others are verbal, logical, visual, kinesthetic, musical, existential, and naturalist. Of course, interpersonal intelligence is included there, too.

People who have high intrapersonal intelligence are typically introverted. However, not all introverts have high intrapersonal intelligence. It could only mean that they are shy or uncomfortable around others.

So, how do you know if you belong in the Intrapersonal Intelligence spectrum?

  1. You are independent — People who are in tune with themselves are usually independent. They do not need the validation of others to thrive. Of course, it does not mean that they do not appreciate praise or two. However, they know what their goals are and are not afraid to pursue them, whether others like it or not. You would find them dining out alone or watching movies by themselves.
  • Self-motivated — They find a way to rise above challenges without the help of other people. Whereas others might need the support of friends and family to go on, people with intrapersonal intelligence will push through.
  • They stick to their principles — The opinions of others do not sway people like these. They form their own values and beliefs. Come what may, they will stick to their guns when the chips are down. They are also less likely to be corrupted by the appeal of money and power.
  • They prefer working alone — It does not mean that they cannot work in a team, but they excel when working alone. Some people excel at some things, and teamwork is the Achilles heel of those with intrapersonal intelligence. It is the reason why you will see them typically owning their own business or work in a field where they make decisions on their own.
  • They are philosophical — They view life from another perspective. Even if they are saddled with too many problems that will break most people, they are less likely to be affected. You can attribute this to how they look at things from a philosophical viewpoint. They can put logic on any situation, rather than be ruled by emotions.
  • They are goal-oriented — In relation to being self-motivated, they know their goals early on. When they set their eyes on the prize, you better step back as they try to get it. They are not afraid to step on some toes to fulfill their dreams. But it is not done with any malice. Sometimes, they simply have tunnel vision when they set a goal.
  • They are optimistic — Generally speaking, people with intrapersonal intelligence have a positive outlook on life. It might be because of their ability for self-reflection. They can pick apart any emotions and typically arrive at the answer of why they feel that way.

Those are the characteristics of a person with intrapersonal intelligence. There are other tendencies, as well, such as their propensity to keep a journal, their impulse toward organization, hold long, insightful conversations with people they trust.
