How to Make Self Care Your Number One Priority

Date:

The last two years have been particularly stressful for all of us. A global pandemic has turned the world upside down, rearranging daily routines for most and causing momentous change for others. Yes, we are all living with stress, so now – more than ever – it is important to take charge of your life by putting your mind and body first.

Self-care was once considered something frivolous for those who had extra time on their hands. Today, self care has become essential in order for you to reduce the stress of things you cannot control. Self care is about focusing on what you can control, namely, you.

Self care falls into three major categories: physical health, mental health, and social health. Think about how well you are coping in each of these areas.

Physical Health

A sound and healthy body makes you feel good all over and gives you the energy to combat your stress. Look at your daily routine. How attentive are you to your physical wellbeing? Have you built in a regular exercise routine? This does not necessarily mean paying for an expensive gym membership. You can start by just increasing your daily walking.

Find time to walk every day and do it consistently. Quit those escalators and elevators and take the stairs. Join together with a walking buddy who will keep you motivated. If you are too busy in the morning and too tired after work, then walk during your lunch break. Increased movement has been proven to release stress and add to longevity.

Be sure to check your diet. A growing body of evidence links highly processed and high-fat foods to anxiety, whereas foods rich in magnesium, zinc, and the B vitamins help to lower anxiety. So make sure you are eating plenty of leafy greens, nuts, whole grains, eggs, and fish to ensure you are getting these all-important nutrients. Make time for yourself to decompress at home and put it on the family schedule so everyone knows you are not to be interrupted.

A long soak in a tub filled with Epsom salts while reading a good book will work wonders to ease the stress of the day. Numerous products are available to help you destress. Use a foam roller to roll away those tight muscles. Light a diffuser with your favorite essential oils to create a calming space around you. Try a soothing facemask or your favorite CBD face cream to relieve tension headaches and inflammation. Drink your favorite herbal tea to calm you as you prepare for sleep. Most importantly, create a sleep schedule and stick to it. Making sleep a top priority will help you reduce anxiety.

Mental Health

Self care is about nurturing your mental well-being. This includes your intellectual, emotional, and spiritual health. Be sure to take time to read a good book or work on a puzzle. Many people benefit from keeping a gratitude journal to remind themselves of the good things all around them. Meditation is also a proven way to ease anxiety.

Being mindful is important to your mental health as it helps you to focus on your personal space and remain in the present. Both yoga and tai chi benefit your mind as well as your body because they require you to focus fully on the execution of each movement and breath, allowing you to free your mind from those nagging thoughts about pressing demands.

Social Health

Taking care of your social health is also important to self care. This is especially so in a time where we have been forced into isolation from one another. Humans are highly social creatures. Now more than ever, it is important to reach out to your friends. It is also the time to consider just who your friends are. In this age of social media influencers, we often interact with people we don’t really know and begin to embrace them as friends.

Take a moment to declutter your friendships and consider the people you truly care about. It is important to reach out to them on a regular basis. Even if they are far away, technology will allow you face-to-face access for those real conversations that are so essential to your mental well-being. The more effort and time you put into your real friends and family, the more satisfied you will become with life.

Now is the time to focus on you. Self care is not a luxury. Self care is a crucial part of your physical, mental, and social well-being. Practicing self care will ensure you live your best life which in turn will positively affect the well-being of the family, friends, and colleagues you interact with every day. It’s a win-win for all.
