Important Things to Do When Moving House

Date:

Moving house can be a stressful process. There are lots of things to sort out, and time is of the essence. However, following a few simple steps can make the move much smoother.

Here are some important things that you need to do when you move house. Everything from agreeing the contracts to packing up to arranging a cargo van courier, this checklist below has you covered for your next move.

Agree a Move-in Date

The first thing to do is agree a date to move into your new home. Usually, if you’re buying a house, you need to move out of your current house and into your new one all in the same day, so it can very stressful! If you’re renting, you may be able to move in over several days.

  • Finalise the Contracts

At a similar time to agreeing your move in date you need to finalise the contract with the seller. This involves signing a number of documents, and of attaining the keys to your new home. Once the contracts are signed, the house is officially yours.

  • Pack Up and Label Your Things

Now you have a move in date, it’s time to start packing your things up. Be smart with how you pack up your items. Make the most of the space that you have in each box. Often couriers charge per box so the more you have the more you will pay. Fragile and delicate items should be wrapped safely in boxes full of foam or bubble wrap. Make sure to label each box and possibly weigh and measure them for the courier.

  • Find a Courier and Get a Quote

The Nextep is to arrange a courier. For removals, it’s recommended that you go with a cargo van courier who can pick up and deliver your heavy boxes and items within the same day, no matter what the size or weight. Be sure to do your research and choose a reliable company to go with, as they quite literally will be taking all of your belongings with them in the van!

  • Organise Your Utility Suppliers

Once you have moved into your new home, you need to sort out your utility suppliers. This includes electricity, gas, Wi-Fi, water, and broadband. Shop around and do your research to see which companies offer the best prices. You don’t always necessarily have to go with the companies that the previous homeowners used.

It’s always a good idea to inform internet suppliers of your move a few weeks beforehand if you can. Internet can take weeks to get sorted after you move in, which can make things difficult, especially if you work from home.

  • Unpack Your Things

This step is a given, but of course you need to unpack everything when you move. It can be difficult to get everything unpacked within the first few days, so you might find you have a few boxes left in the corner of the room for a few weeks until you finally find time to unpack them. As long as you unpack the essentials (such as cutlery, bedding, and clothing) then you should be good to go.

  • Relax

The final (and most enjoyable) step is relaxing in your new home. You’ve done all the hard work now. Grab a hot drink, get your feet up, and enjoy your new home.
