Water Safety Tips To Remember For Your Next Vacation

Date:

In the United States alone, tourists spend around $44 billion a year visiting coastal areas, according to Water Encyclopedia. The allure of clean and clear water can enhance any tourist attraction, which is why droves of people visit places like mountain lakes, beaches, and riverside ruins of ancient civilizations. As beautiful as waterside attractions are, these places still have significant hazards that tourists should be aware of to stay safe while on holiday.

General water safety for tourists

Even if you don’t intend to go swimming or boating, there’s still a chance that a tourist attraction located near a body of water catches your eye. If you want to visit a waterside attraction, it is advisable to always keep close to other people when going near the water. This way, someone can spot you and you can easily get help if ever you accidentally fall into the lake, river, or ocean. Watch out for slippery edges, sloped shores, and collapsing riverbanks too.

You also might want to take a dip in your hotel’s pool. But while a pool may initially seem safer than swimming in the ocean, it presents its own hazards that you should know and avoid. For one thing, diving is unwise because hotel and resort pools are not expressly designed for it. Also, never swim in a pool that hasn’t been cleaned as dirty pools can give you infections. On the other hand, pools saturated with cleaning chemicals can cause chemical damage to your body, so wait at least 8 hours before swimming in a freshly treated pool.

Guidelines for swimmers

Swimming can be perfectly safe for you as long as you observe proper safety guidelines. The two most important things to remember are to never swim alone, and never swim under the influence. It is also prudent to listen to weather reports when you are vacationing in a tropical country. In the tropics, a seemingly sunny day can turn into a stormy one within minutes.

Additionally, keep your eyes on the horizon when swimming in the sea since big waves can form at unpredictable intervals. If you see one starting to ramp up, get back to shallower waters to protect yourself from being swept away. Other things to avoid include coral, unfamiliar aquatic life, rocky shores and piers as you can get injured if you get too close to them. You should also watch out for rip currents as they can form anywhere where there are breaking waves. This dangerous phenomenon can be difficult to get out of if you don’t know how to do so or if you aren’t a skilled swimmer.

Safety tips for boaters

Boaters are often the best-equipped to protect against drowning and other water hazards. However, they can still get in an accident if they’re not being careful. As a boater, always keep your lifejacket on and inflated. A rogue wave can blindside you with only a few seconds’ warning. If it’s strong enough, it can knock you out, disabling you from pulling the manual cord. Even if your life jacket is automatic, it would still be best to keep your head on a swivel and avoid hazards that can stun or incapacitate you. As with swimming, be aware of obstacles such as rocky areas and keep updated on weather reports. It would also be prudent to keep your pleasure craft as light as possible. This helps protect against capsizing in the event of a sudden weather disturbance.

Brush up on water safety knowledge before you go on holiday. Doing so while ensure that your next vacation is as fun and safe as possible.
