History of the Island

St. Catherine’s Island has a long and varied history. It was first inhabited by the native Taino people, who called it AyAyA. It was later settled by the Spanish, who renamed it Isla de Santa Catalina. The island changed hands several times over the next few centuries, before being settled by the British in 1765. The British named it St. Catherine’s Island and used it as a base for their operations in the West Indies.

The island remained under British control until 1815, when it was ceded to the United States as part of the Treaty of Ghent. It was then sold to a private owner, who turned it into a cattle ranch. In 1926, the island was bought by an American businessman, Edward Rickenbacker, who developed it into a luxury resort.

The resort closed down in the early 1940s due to financial difficulties, and the island was abandoned once again. In 1978, it was purchased by The Conservation Fund and turned into a nature reserve. Today, the island is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including endangered species such as the loggerhead turtle and the red-footed tortoise.
