Finding the Best Muesli Brands in the Market

Date:

Moms always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Based on an article released by the Rush University Medical Center, breakfast-eaters have a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) and perform better mentally than those who skip breakfast.

According to nutritionists, some of the best breakfasts contain oats, eggs, nuts, seeds, fruits, whole grain carbohydrates, and dairy products like milk and yogurt.  Fortunately, there is a breakfast option that contains most of these ingredients – it is called muesli.

If you want to know more about how the best muesli brand will meet your nutritional needs, read this article.

What are the ingredients of muesli?

Believe it or not, muesli was supposed to be an appetizer for Swiss patients, not a breakfast choice.  The doctor-nutritionist Maximilian Oskar Bircher-Benner introduced muesli as a starter to his patients’ meals, based on the belief that raw foods are more nutritious.  The original recipe was a combination of apples, nuts, oats, lemon juice, and sweetened dairy.

Today’s packaged muesli is similar to the original version. However, the best muesli brand is free from preservatives and is labeled non-GMO (genetically modified).  GMO products are genetically modified to improve resistance from disease-causing microorganisms and herbicides.  However, according to a recent medical article, GMO foods result in allergies and cancer.  Moreover, it lowers resistance to antibiotics.

The best brands of muesli contain the following:

  • Whole rolled oats

Rolled oats are whole grain, making it a better source of fiber than instant oats.  It has vitamin B, essential minerals, and antioxidants.  It is also known to lower levels of LDL cholesterol and blood sugar.

  • Wholegrain red wheat flakes

Red wheat flakes, typically used to replace multi-grain bread, are rich in protein and soluble fiber.

  • Dates

Nutritionists recommend dates as a satisfying replacement to sugar.  The fruit is also rich in antioxidants and reduces blood pressure due to its high magnesium content.  It contributes to brain health and reduces bone loss in menopausal women.

  • Raisins

A small amount of raisins already supplies fiber, iron, calcium, and boron.  Therefore, it is the perfect antidote to constipation, anemia, and osteoporosis.  Boron, a mineral that works well with vitamin D and calcium, is necessary for healthy joints.

  • Almonds

Similar to other muesli ingredients, almonds are rich in fiber, minerals, and antioxidants.  Its high magnesium content is ideal for controlling the blood sugar level of people with diabetes.

  • Unsweetened coconut without sulfur

Sulfur dioxide preserves dried fruits. Normally harmless to most people, sulfur results in breathing and skin problems in people sensitive to the preservative.

  • Cranberries sweetened with apple juice.

The polyphenols in cranberries lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, based on a recent study.  In addition to this, cranberries slow down the progression of most kinds of cancer.  Since the fruit tastes sour and bitter, natural apple juice improves the taste.

  • Flax seeds

As a super-food, flax seeds are good sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).  ALA is omega-3 sourced from plants.  Omega-3 is known to prevent heart blockage and reduce inflammation.

Are all muesli products the same?

Honestly, no.  People choose their favorite brands of muesli based on their preferred taste – whether toasted, non-sugar, nutty, or fruity.

However, it is best to support manufacturers that support the environment.

First, the best muesli brand uses biodegradable packaging.  Examples of biodegradable materials are paper, cardboard, and corn-based plastic, commonly called PLA.  Polylactic acid (PLA) is an acceptable plastic substitute made from the starch of fermented plants.

Secondly, consumers should assist solar-powered businesses.  Solar energy is one of the country’s solutions to counteract the damages of climate change.

Lastly, it is best to buy muesli that contains locally-sourced ingredients.  In this way, consumers have the assurance of getting products with high-quality standards.  Plus, this is one of the best ways to build the local economy. Therefore, get on the right track to good health by choosing the best muesli brand.
