Azevedo-Grout grew up in the Mission District of San Francisco. She attended Saint Elizabeth’s Elementary School and Sacred Heart High School. After high school, she attended the University of California at Berkeley, where she majored in sociology.

Azevedo-Grout’s career began as a community organizer in Oakland, California. She later worked as a staff member for then-Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris. In 1995, she became the executive director of the Oakland Housing Authority.

Lillian Azevedo-Grout is a medical doctor and public health researcher who has devoted her career to improving the health of women and children. She is currently a professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health.

Dr. Azevedo-Grout earned her medical degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. She then completed a residency in pediatrics at the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo. She later earned a Master of Science in Public Health from Harvard University.

Dr. Azevedo-Grout has worked on a variety of research projects focused on improving the health of women and children. She has conducted research on the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity, the impact of maternal obesity on child health, and the development of interventions to improve maternal and child health in developing countries.

In her role as a professor at UC Berkeley, Dr. Azevedo-Grout teaches courses on maternal and child health, global health, and epidemiology. She is also the Director of the Center for Global Child Health at UC Berkeley.
