The 8th generation of consoles had tried to push the limits of gaming to its limit. Never had we seen some huge gaming worlds with polygons counts in the millions where you can spend hundreds of hours being whatever you wanted to be, from a superhero in Manhattan to a cowboy in the sunny wild west.
The Sony PlayStation 4 was the clear winner in the 8th generation console wars, getting some of the best studios and games to grace the platform with exclusives which the PC and Xbox gamers are still desperately petitioning for to come to their platforms.
However, we are going to pick out the Top 10 games of this console generation with some PS4 exclusives added to the mix, which we are sure will keep you busy for hundreds of hours with gameplay and stories that you will never forget.
This list is not in a specific order, and all the games we are going to tell you about are our personal favorites.
Grand Theft Auto 5
Grand Theft Auto 5 technically is a 7th generation game; however, we recommend you pick up the 8th generation re-release in 2015. Unless you have been living under a rock, you will know why we recommend this to you. This game is one of the highest-grossing video game ever with one of the biggest open worlds in a Rockstar release before Red Dead Redemption 2.
You play as the three protagonists Michael, Trevor, and Franklin in a Los Santos redone map. They go through a series of events that lead all three of them to plan one of the biggest heists ever.
Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online are the recommended best PS4 games if you want something to keep you busy for months on end. You can also get a copy of it pretty cheap these days.
Red Dead Redemption 2
This is another Rockstar game that we will be adding to the mix. A sequel to the first game Red Dead Redemption and the third game in the Red Dead Saga, the game story is a prequel to the John Marston story when he used to run together in a gang of outlaws under the leadership of Dutch Van der Linde. You get to play as Author Morgan as he is on the run with his fellow gang members after a robbery gone wrong. You explore a vast open-world going through various experiences where you get to see Arthur play out his redemption story. I refuse to spoil this game for anyone, but if you are someone with a heart, you will come out of this game teary-eyed.
The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3 is the third game by Polish developer’s CD Projekt Red, based on the novel by Andrzej Sapkowski. You play as a Witcher called Geralt of Rivia, searching for his adopted daughter Ciri. Playing as Geralt, you can hunt dangerous monsters who terrorize the villagers that are in your way. The game has a very vast and dynamic open-world map, which will have you hooked to the screen for hours on end.
The Yakuza series of games are based on the Japanese crime syndicate called Yakuza. Developed and Published by SEGA, you get to play as Kiryu Kazama or Majima moving through the cities of Satenbori and Kamarucho, playing out their stories. Unlike the last three games on the list, the open world is not that big, and you might even run into invisible walls, but they are very dense and packed with content.
The Unchartered Series
Our first PlayStation exclusive of the list, the unchartered series lets you play as Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who travels around the world in search of lost treasures. The games are all linear experiences, but they have some of the best-looking graphics of the 8th generation.
Detroit: Becomes Human
A personal favorite of mine, Detroit: Becomes Human by Quantic Dreams, started as a PS4 exclusive but is now released for PC as well. This game lets you play as three androids, mainly Conner, Kara, and Markus, in a dystopian future where Androids are treated as slaves. These androids must join to lead a Civil Rights Movement for the Androids. The game has countless changing narrative decisions, and you will be on your toes at all times while facing them.
The Last of US Series
The game has undoubtedly one of the best stories ever told on the gaming medium. You play as Joel, who is a smuggler, and you have to escort a girl through a post-apocalyptic America. You have to protect her from all the inhuman creatures and evil characters. I will not say anything more than this. You will have to play this to know why I am recommending it.
Assassin Creed: Odessey
You get to play as Kassandra or Alexios in ancient Rome during the Peloponnesian Wars. You are a mercenary who wants revenge on the cult who tried to kill you when you were a kid. As you move through one of the biggest open world (seconded only to AC: Valhalla), you get to know more secrets and uncover more conspiracies.
It might be very easy to dismiss outer worlds as a fallout clone, but be assured that this is an experience you do not want to miss. You are a captain of your ship. You move through many planets, taking quests in an alternate timeline as you are the only person who can save the lives of the trapped Humans on a faraway satellite.
The Hitman 1 and 2 is a must-play title if you are a fan of stealth video games. You play as Agent 47, who is tasked with assassinating some of the world’s most important figures. You have a lot of options to create the perfect Kill. This game’s real value lies in the high replayability of the title and the satisfaction one receives when landing the perfect Kill.
These were our top picks for this generation of PlayStation. Please note that the list was subjective and does not wish to offend anyone.
