Where to Save and Where to Splurge When Travelling

Date:

There is a surprising amount of admin that goes into travelling. From figuring out the length of your trip to planning a budget that will last you – there’s lots for you to think about. There will be times when you’ll need to save money, but there will be moments when you can let yourself splurge. If you’re looking for help with figuring out money for your next trip, you’re in the right place.

Transport

There are lots of ways you can save money on your transport. Compare budget airline carriers to get cheap flights. Browse for flexible train fares to get you to the airport. Plus, if you take overnight buses and trains, this saves you money on a night of accommodation. A general rule of thumb is: the longer the journey takes, the cheaper it costs. If you’re short on time for your trip, it could be worth spending more money on transport so you can make the most of visiting each place.

Accommodation

You can also save money on your accommodation. After all, when you’re on holiday you won’t be spending much time in your room as you’ll be out exploring. You’ve got a few different options here. If you’re the backpacker kind of traveller, hostels are a great, cheap, option. Or, if you cannot stand the thought of bunk beds, search for discount deals for hotels or check out alternative places on Airbnb.

Activities

Activities are something you definitely splurge on. Ask yourself: when are you going to be here again and have the opportunity to do this? Whether it’s scuba diving or snorkelling, a sunset cruise or a vineyard tour. There are certain experiences you can only have once. It’s worth spending money to create memories that you will always treasure.

Food and Drink

When you’re travelling, you’ll switch between saving and splurging on food and drink. It will depend on where you’re staying. For instance, camping lends itself to cheap grub. Whereas if you’re on a city break, you should definitely make the most of the local cuisine. A simple way of saving money but still having a great dining experience is to avoid the tourist spots. It’s more authentic, and the atmosphere will be much better.

It’s your trip and your experience. While it’s great to save money and score discounts when you can, don’t let money take over your travels. What do you splurge money on when you travel?
